METROPOLIS | SUPERB CONCRETE PAVILION

METROPOLIS | SUPERB CONCRETE PAVILION

A sheltered haven in a residential home with unparalleled views of the Mother City's mountainous landmark, Table Mountain.Cape Town-based architect firm Metropolis has designed a concrete pavilion as part of the renovation of a villa in Constantia, a suburb immersed in greenery. The pavilion is a sheltered haven in the garden, featuring seating, dining areas, and a suspended chimney..

It is conceived to be elemental, of itself, more of an object than a building, which can compete in its perceptual power with the strength of the surrounding landscape on the one had and the artificiality of its immediate surroundings on the other.

The pavilion is overlooked by the main house, and is made up of series of thick concrete slabs, which together combine a shelter that extends out from the hillside. Structurally, the roof canopy rests on walls at the rear and is supported by a slender pillar at the front, creating a sweeping space underneath.

A beautifully minimal concrete inspiration.
