Beyerskloof Wine Estate | Pure elegance in structure

Beyerskloof Wine Estate | Pure elegance in structure

This exciting commercial project was at Beyerskloof Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, an award winning wine farm in the Koelenhof area within the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin region.  The scope of the project was to create the structure for the restaurant area and wine cellar - Cobute supplied its precast elements for decking, beams and staircase.

Cobute Precast Stairs

The Cobute precast staircase comprises of modular elements, with the main reinforcement cast in at the factory. Once the elements arrive on site, they allow for modular installation of the girders, soffit and risers - this create a shell that is filled when the concrete is poured. For this specific project, the risers had light points cut to ease the installation of light points in the risers.

Cobute Decking System

The decking system designed and patented by Cobute consists of precast concrete ribs and interlocking panels. While the ribs height changes according to the thickness of the slab, the precast panels come in a standard size. Cobute manufactures slabs of 10 different thicknesses in increments of 25mm, and 15 different reinforcing combinations to suit the Engineer’s design.

The Cobute decking has an R Value (Thermal Resistance) of 0.4889 for a 250mm thick slab. The slab holds a fire resistance certificate of 150 minutes for a 230mm thick slab.

The Cobute precast beams were used over large window openings to support the slab.

The precast rib and panel system is monolithically connected to the stair system, to avoid cracking and cold joint.

One of the innovations of the Cobute decking system consists of the use of polystyrene blocks as void formers, which ensures that the system can be one of the lightest on the market , equal to 97kg/sqm before casting. Moreover, the use of polystyrene ensures:

  • a reduction of approximately 50% of the total amount of concrete needed

  • a much greater variation in slab thickness without any undue increase in the in-situ concrete

  • a lightweight structure

  • an easy service distribution

  • a contribution to thermal and acoustic insulation.
