Constantia | Suspended ground floor slab

In this residential project in Constantia, Pr.Engineer Alan Hendrie designed the Cobute precast systems for the construction of two structures; a garage/studio and a house. While the garage made use of the Cobute precast decking for its roof slab, the house presented an interesting design consisting of a suspended ground floor slab on stub columns. For this scope, the integrated systems of beams, decking and edge ribs were used.

The slab, used for 192sqm, had a span of over 6m, supported by 83m of precast beams and 22m of edge ribs. The Cobute precast slab consists of three elements, namely ribs, interlocking panels and polystyrene blocks. While the panels are manufactured in standard size, the precast ribs are manufactured at the corresponding thickness of the slab, with the steel specified in the design cast in; additional steel fixing can be easily done on site. This ensures peace of mind with the correct steel in position, as it will not move during the casting.

Edge ribs are permanent concrete edge shutter,s manufactured with the elements of the Cobute precast beam and rib systems. The edge rib replaces timber shutters, decreasing amount of waste on site while increasing installation speed and the quality of the finishing.
