Cobute Precast Beams

Cobute Precast Beams

This residential project saw the collaboration between the contractor Rob Doughty with Pr. Engineer Alan Hendrie and the Cobute Technical Team. The scope of the project included supplying a comprehensive range of the Cobute solutions, working both on the new and existing structure

  • first floor extension with precast slab, beams and edge ribs

  • creation of a new balcony with the use of the precast beams

One of the fun challenges was creating a gutter inside the slab, with the use of polystyrene, as per the sketch detail below.

What is an edge rib?

The Precast Edge Rib manufactured by Cobute is a permanent concrete edge shutter, designed using the structural elements of the Cobute beam and the rib. This element consists of an L shaped rib, with zigzag steel and a concrete edge.

The edge rib dramatically eases the creation of an edge to a cantilever balcony, like in the current project.

The Edge Rib replaces timber shutters

The Edge Rib replaces timber shutters

  • replaces the use of timber shutter

  • reduces waste on site

  • improves installation speed

  • improves the finishing - as once poured, the permanent shutter forms the outer side of a concrete edge, without requiring any carpentry work.

As per the Cobute slab ribs and beams, the engineer design specifies both the steel reinforcement of the edge rib and the height of the side panel, which ranges from 150 to 300 mm. When used combination with the slab system, the rib can include a lip. Once poured, the permanent shutter forms the outer side of a concrete edge, without requiring any carpentry work.
